As I accept this award, there are so many people to thank like Rob, Ted, Kristin, Kara, Cindy, Emma and Lilian. However, the two who stand out in my mind the most are my husband, Jerry, who supports me fully and budgets our finances so that I may continue this adventure. The second is the Honorable Derrick DeLay. Derrick has been my support in making life changes. I am extremely thankful for his energy, expertise and deranged humor. I would like to address three areas in which my life that have changed dramatically: the first is centered below my waist and above my ankles, my knees. Recently, due to painful arthritis and loss of tissue around the knee, I had a left knee replacement. Although frightened to have major surgery it was necessary. Derrick began doing knee exercises with me to prepare for the event. He also helped me develop a mantra to begin saying to myself. Surprisingly, the chant was very powerful, as were many prayers. At the hospital, physical therapy began the day of surgery. My trainer there was very pleased with my base line of flexibility and I received stars from all in attendance. I attribute this to the Great Healer and also the diligent exercises Derrick demanded. The lash was threatened many times so I did not hesitate to obey! The second change has been in a natural weight loss consistent with exercise and reduced intake. I am also making different food choices and the more information I learn I realize eating properly makes such a difference in general well being as well as increased energy. Although, I do go berserk from time to time. I am trying to avoid being swayed by the numbers on the scale. However, I have reached a healthy set point and certainly never dreamed I would return to the weight I maintained in my 30’s. Finally, because we work on balance, posture and strength training, I feel confident of myself. I try to be at NWPT four times a week. I am also continuing physical therapy at the Vancouver Clinic.
