IN THE MID 90’s I BELONGED TO THE PRINCETON ATHLETIC CLUB, AND DID MY BEST TO GO TO THE NOON CLASSES 3 TIMES A WEEK. AT THAT TIME STEP AEROBICS WAS THE RAGE. THERE WAS A BASIC MUSCLE TONING CLASS WHERE WE USED 2 OR 3 LB WEIGHTS AND I REMEMBER THINKING THAT 5 LB WEIGHTS WOULD BE MY ABSOLUTE MAX WEIGHT SOMETIME IN THE FUTURE! I WAS IN MY MID AND THEN I MET SHERRI. SHE STARTED WORKING AT PRINCETON AND REALLY RAMPED THINGS UP. HER STEP CLASS WAS AWESOME – YOU HAD TO GET THERE EARLY TO MAKE SURE YOU GOT A BENCH AND A SPOT ON THE FLOOR. SHE INTRODUCED A ONCE – A – WEEK EARLY MORNING 90 MINUTE BOOT CAMP CLASS. IN IT SHE PUSHED ME TO DO THINGS I NEVER THOUGH I COULD DO – PUSHUPS AND PULLUPS, WIND SPRINTS, AND LONG JUMPS, LIFTING HEAVY WEIGHTS. AT THE END OF THE CLASS I WOULD BE EXHAUSTED, SORE, AND DRENCHED IN SWEAT. BUT ALSO ENERGIZED BECAUSE I MADE IT THROUGH! IT WAS A GREAT WAY TO START THE DAY – REALLY HELPED ME DEAL WITH STRESS AT WORK. WHEN SHERRI AND HER TEAM OPENED UP NORTHWEST PERSONAL TRAINING I FOLLOWED HER THERE AND HAVE BEEN GOING TO THE CLUB EVER SINCE. THE TRAINERS CONTINUE TO PUSH ME TO MY LIMITS, AND I CONTINUE TO BE EXHAUSTED, SORE, AND SWEATY AT THE END OF EACH CLASS. I MAY BE SLOWER AND STIFFER, BUT I AM STRONGER AND HAVE MORE ENDURANCE NOW THAN IN MY 30’S. AND AS A RESULT, I HAVE DONE THINGS I NEVER THOUGHT I COULD, LIKE RUNNING LOTS OF 5K’S, 10K’S, AND HALF – MARATHONS, PARTICIPATING IN LONG – DISTANCE RELAY RACES, AND HIKING THE GRAND CANYON AND THE HO CHI MINH TRAIL. 5LB WEIGHTS ARE NOTHING NOW! |
