“Once you decide what you want, you make a commitment to that decision.” “Faith is the ability to not panic.” Being in shape does more for a person than almost anything else. When your body functions and doesn’t have to strain to complete day to day tasks, life is easier. That continues to become more and more clear for me the older I become. As a person who has defined herself as an athlete for almost her entire life, I started to fail my body about 5 years ago. I ripped the first quote out of Oprah magazine in September of 2005. I’ve had it on my dresser for the last 7 years and read it almost every day. In March of 2011, I made a commitment to myself. My neighbor and running partner, Kelley, talked about doing the 6 week challenge at NWPT. She had done it before and I opted out of it. This time, due to my son participating in the Junior Program, I was more interested in participating. Now, working out and going to a gym wasn’t unfamiliar to me. I’d always worked out, played soccer, looked for exercise opportunities, rode my bike, rollerbladed, swam, ran…tried to be as active as possible. I was at my heaviest, non-pregnant weight ever. AND, was frustrated by my inability to do anything about it. So, I committed to myself. I jumped in with both feet to the challenge. Loved the working out, loved the changes in my body, loved the definition in my arms. But wasn’t losing so much weight. Food journaling came into play…amazed what a difference that made. The weight came off and people noticed and wanted to know what I did. Of course, I talked up the challenge and the group classes. Still am talking them up. Now, for the second quote which came from a church reader board. I think being in shape helped me this fall when my husband ended up in the hospital after having 2 mild heart attacks. Did I mention he’s 42? I didn’t panic. I was able to maintain composure, ask questions and support him as a battery of tests and people became part of our world for a few days. Once we were home, being in shape continues to assist me as I negotiate my new view of our reality. I like to work out in the morning because I’ll do it and kid schedules don’t get in the way. My husband’s need for me to be there does. But we continue to work out a system so I can get what I need for myself and he can get the support he needs from me. My fitness goals are simple: I want to be more like Paul – flexible and strong. Happy like Jenna. And peaceful.
