For me, exercise is all about being healthy. How much I weigh and what I look like are ancillary benefits to being healthy. A couple years ago I weighed 214 lbs and was on the highest allowable doses of medicines for cholesterol and high blood pressure. I could barely exert myself for more than 5 minutes without being gassed. It was a long way from my days as a college athlete and high school wrestling coach. In March 2012, I deployed to Afghanistan for my job and while I was gone Michele, my wife, joined NWPT. She was my inspiration to start exercising myself. I returned to running as a form of exercise to get my health back under control. By the time I returned I weighed 158 lbs and had a goal of completing two marathons within the first year back but quickly experienced a setback with a pretty severe Achilles tendon injury. My wife was working with Derrick DeLay at NWPT and thought he could help me with my running so she bought me a 4 session gift certificate and I scheduled and began my workouts at NWPT. After my initial consultation, my schedule limited my availability and Derrick did not have time available so I started working with Cody McHaney once a week. After the initial four sessions I continued coming because I could see the value of quality coaching. After several months a time slot opened up with Derrick and I started working one day per week with him in addition to my time with Cody. Over a year since starting, I am off both medications with my doctor’s blessing, my Achilles injury is healed and I run, cycle, go to NWPT where I do PT with Derrick twice a week, and group classes two to three times a week. I have recently completed a 10 mile race and two half marathons. Next month I will achieve my goal of doing a marathon, and plan on participating in my first triathlon, the Hood-to-Coast relay, and a second marathon in the fall. Without the coaching, support and motivation that working with trainers from NWPT provides I do not know if I could have ever worked through the injury and come back as strong as I have. I have worked with many trainers besides Cody and Derrick including Cindy, Marijka, Judith, Trevor, Lacy, Leah and Kristin and all of them are knowledgeable and conscientious about helping you reach your goals. My next goal will be to complete an ultra-marathon in 2016. Now I think I will go get myself a drink of water. |
