If you’re like most people, time is one of the biggest barriers to regular exercise. After working in the fitness industry for 37 years, I’ve seen it over and over – people show up to the gym with great intentions but end up wasting valuable minutes wandering, scrolling, or doing exercises that don’t give them the best return on their effort. The good news? With a few simple strategies, you can dramatically increase the effectiveness of every workout.

Some of My Favorite Workout Efficiency Hacks:
Superset Your Exercises
Instead of resting between sets, pair two exercises back-to-back that work different muscle groups (like upper body and lower body or push & pull). This keeps your heart rate up and cuts your workout time significantly without sacrificing results.

Prioritize Compound Movements
Focus on exercises that work multiple muscle groups at once like squats, lunges, chinups, push-ups, and rows. These movements give you more bang for your buck compared to isolated exercises and help you build strength faster.
Have a Plan Before You Walk In
One of the biggest time-wasters is figuring out what to do once you’re already at the gym. Go in with a clear plan so you can move with purpose and stay focused from start to finish.
Work with a Trainer
Even a few sessions with a qualified trainer to set you up on a plan that you do solo can be a game-changer. They can design efficient workouts, correct your form, and ensure every minute you spend training is productive.
Limit Rest Time
Unless your goal is maximum strength, you probably don’t need long breaks. Keep rest periods to 30–60 seconds for most workouts to maintain intensity and efficiency.
Use Timed Circuits
Set a timer and rotate through a series of exercises. For example, you could do a different exercise every minute. There are playlists that will provide various workout structures like 45 seconds work: 15 seconds rest or Tabata (20 seconds work/10 seconds rest x 8). This creates structure, urgency, and a highly effective full-body workout in a short window.
Skip the Cardio
If you don’t have a ton of time, skip the cardio and perform full body strength movements with limited rest it between. This type of a strength workout will provide you a cardiovascular benefit.
Do a Virtual Workout
If you’re tight for time and can’t make it to the gym, do one of our NWPT virtual workouts. It will save you the driving and parking time.
Minimize Distractions
Put your phone on airplane mode or use it only for music or a workout app. Staying focused can easily save you 10-15 minutes per session.
Track Your Workouts
Logging your exercises, weights, and reps helps you stay accountable and avoid wasted effort. You’ll know exactly what you did last time and can build on it. A trainer can help with this.
Efficiency in the gym isn’t about doing less; it’s about doing what matters most. When you train with intention, you’ll get better results in less time and walk out feeling like every minute counted.
