When people set goals, they often believe success requires aiming high right out of the gate. Bigger goals must mean bigger results, right? Not always. In fact, some of the most powerful lessons about sustainable success come from an unexpected source: how trainers work with whales at SeaWorld. Set the bar low like a whale!

When trainers teach whales to leap high out of the water, they don’t start by setting the bar way above the surface and waiting for a miracle jump. That would set the whale up for confusion and failure. Instead, they place the bar near the bottom of the pool. Every time the whale swims over it, the whale is rewarded. Success is immediate. Confidence builds. Then the trainers raise the bar slightly. And slightly again. The whale learns something crucial: I clear the bar, I get rewarded.
Over time, the bar rises above the water. By then, the whale has the confidence, strength, and belief that clearing the bar is what it does. The trainers keep raising it, not because the whale needs pressure, but because it’s ready.
As you set intentions for 2026, this lesson matters. Setting the bar too high at the start can actually sabotage progress. When goals feel overwhelming, motivation fades and self-doubt creeps in. Instead, set the bar so low you can’t help but succeed.
Try This Approach When Setting Intentions for 2026
- Instead of committing to one-hour workouts, start with 10 minutes.
- Instead of “working out every day,” aim for 3 workouts per week.
- Instead of 10,000 steps per day, begin with 5,000.
- Instead of eliminating sweets forever, allow two free days per week.
- Want to cut back on alcohol? Try max two drinks, two times per week.
Each success creates “Results Momentum”, which is the confidence and belief that you can do the next thing and so on. That momentum is far more powerful than willpower.
Remember, perfection is often the enemy of progress. Consistency always beats aggressive goals that can’t be sustained. Low-effort, high-yield habits work wonders. For example, try a 10-minute walk after each meal, even if it’s just around your kitchen. Anyone can do that, and it adds up quickly. Actions like this can make a big difference to your overall health and how you look and feel!
So, as you move into a new year, harness your ‘inner whale’. Set the bar low. Clear it often…and celebrate each win. Then, slowly, steadily, raise the bar and change your life.
