The holiday season can feel like a marathon between shopping, cooking, parties, travel, decorating, and family gatherings. It’s a wonderful time of year, but it can also leave you feeling exhausted, stressed, and out of your fitness routine. The good news is you don’t have to wait for January to get back on track. Stay healthy for the holidays!
Strategies to Stay Healthy, Energized AND Enjoy the Season!
Simplify Your Workouts
When time is tight, something is always better than nothing. Instead of skipping exercise altogether, commit to just 15-30 minutes. A quick express workout, brisk walk, or short bodyweight circuit keeps your energy high and your momentum strong. You’ll feel better and you won’t have to start from scratch in the new year.
Mix It Up
Try a new activity to keep things exciting! If you’re usually in the gym, sign up for a yoga, barre, or dance class. If you love spin, maybe try strength training or rowing for a change. The novelty keeps motivation fresh, and you might even discover a new favorite workout.
Move Together
The holidays are about connection, so why not make it active? Invite family or friends to join you for a workout or an outdoor adventure. Did you know that you can bring a friend or family member for free to NWPT throughout December?! It’s a great way to bond and stay accountable together.
Get Outside
Bundle up and take advantage of the season! Plan a walk, hike, or snowshoe outing, or spend the day skiing or ice skating. Fresh air, daylight, and movement are an instant mood boost and a great way to balance out all those holiday indulgences.
Just Keep Moving
If your schedule is packed, focus on non-exercise activity. Walk instead of drive when possible, take the stairs, park farther away, or stroll the neighborhood to look at lights. Little movement breaks add up and help counter long hours of sitting, eating, and celebrating.
Focus on the Good Stuff
Rather than fixating on what to avoid, prioritize nourishing foods. Aim for plenty of veggies, fruit, lean proteins, and water. Eat regularly because skipping meals often leads to overindulging later. And if you want to indulge in your favorite holiday treat, enjoy it slowly and mindfully.
Rest to Recharge
Don’t underestimate the power of sleep. When you’re well-rested, stress feels lighter, cravings decrease, and motivation improves.
This holiday season, let balance be your goal. Move daily, eat well, sleep deeply, and savor the joy of it all.
