I just returned from teaching strength and mobility classes and workshops at Rancho La Puerta (RLP) in Tecate, Mexico (close to San Diego). It’s such a magical place that many guests attend yearly—some for decades—and others visit multiple times per year for a seasonal reset. Founded 85 years ago by Deborah Szekely, currently a strong, healthy and sharp 104 years young, she is a testimony to clean and healthy living! RLP has become a wellness haven, and I wanted to give you a peek inside so you can decide if it deserves a spot on your bucket list.

Morning Hikes

Health and Wellness Retreats hikeThere’s no better way to start your day than with a sunrise hike. Trails vary from gentle walks to heart-pumping climbs, all surrounded by stunning mountain views. It’s the perfect mix of exercise and soul food. There are 40 miles of hiking trails and 32 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens to enjoy. The hikes aren’t mandatory, so sleep in if you like!

Variety of Workouts

Once you’re back from your hike, the choices are endless—strength training, yoga, Pilates, aqua, stretch, balance, dance, meditation, and even sound healing. You can fill your day with your favorites or try something new that you’ve never experienced!

Sports

If you love tennis or pickleball, this is your playground. Instructors keep things fun with friendly drills and games—you’ll definitely work up a sweat while smiling.

Plant-Based Meals

Food is such a highlight. Almost everything is grown right on the ranch, and meals are beautifully fresh, flavorful, and plant-forward, with fish on the menu for variety. It’s healthy eating that actually feels indulgent.

Sober Living

Guests are encouraged to limit their alcohol consumption during their visit. RLP used to be an alcohol-free zone, but there is now a winery on-site that guests can enjoy. It is about a half-mile walk to get there, so they make you work for it. There is also a celebration on the last night of the retreat and wine is offered. RLP promotes moderation and balance. 

Device-Detox

This is one of my favorite parts—cell phones and laptops are limited to specific areas, which means you’re not constantly glued to a screen. Instead, you’re in the moment, connecting with nature and people.

Social Connection

Meals are shared, conversations flow easily, and lifelong friendships blossom. It’s especially wonderful for solo travelers—you’ll never feel alone here and you’ll meet beautiful people from all over the world.

Personal Growth

Beyond fitness, RLP offers workshops on everything from relationships to goal setting. It’s about strengthening not just your body, but your mind and spirit too.

Music

Live performances by singers and musicians create magical evenings filled with dancing and joy.

Cooking

Guests can take cooking classes to learn how to prepare the same healthy meals at home and even bring gardening practices back home into their daily lives.

Spa

The spa is world-class, with massage, facials, wraps, sauna, steam, red light therapy, and cold plunges for ultimate rejuvenation.

Pools

For a more chill vibe, relax by the pools with a book or nap in the sun.

Sleep

Nights are quiet, with most things wrapping up by 9pm, so restful, deep sleep is guaranteed.
