Each year, during the last weekend in June, thousands of athletes, their family and friends, converge on majestic Central Oregon to take part in the Pacific Crest Endurance Sports Festival. Pacific Crest is known as the jewel of multisport events in the Northwest and it has become a traditional destination race for athletes from across the nation, as well as from across the globe. Coupled with a finishing in a five star destination resort, it is the perfect family vacation destination. Pacific Crest events begin Friday morning, with the competition and fun continuing into Sunday afternoon. The full, fun weekend includes Tour de Crest Bike Tours, 72.3 BEASTMAN, Olympic & Ultra-Sprint Triathlons, Duathlons & AquaBike, Marathon, Half-Marathon, 10k, 5k, 28K & 50K Trail Run and three kids events – truly something for everyone! Plus, The Village shopping area in Sunriver becomes the Athletes Village and Sports & Fitness Expo, with a terrific assortment of gear, clothing, health products, food and beverages to sample and fun “giftables” to purchase. In the Deschutes Brewery Beer Garden, next to the Village Bar and Grill, athletes, family and friends can enjoy Deschutes Brewery beers, great food, and live entertainment throughout the weekend. Bands from around the region, including the extremely popular Hit Machine will perform Friday and Saturday nights to Rock the Village and keep the celebration in full swing. Plus local groups will entertain the crowd through the afternoons Friday and Saturday.

We brought back the Ultra Sprint – ½ mile Swim, 28 mile Bike - sorry, we can’t move the Lake any closer to the village 😉 - and a 3.5 mile run! With the altitude and hills, this distance will be a huge hit with many and more manageable than the Oly and the 72.3 BEASTMAN!

Not only do you have to do an extra 2 miles on the bike compared to a typical Half Iron, but you also have to deal with a starting altitude of 4359 feet above sea level and you gain an additional 2814 feet of elevation during the bike course. Plus you're also typically dealing with high temperatures so once you cross the finish line, it's quite an accomplishment and definitely not for the faint of heart! We think you will all agree that if you conquer Pacific Crest, you are definitely a BEAST and that's exactly what we will announce as you cross the finish line. Olympic Distance Triathlon, Duathlon & AquaBike – Although half the distance of the 72.3 BEASTMAN, the Olympic Distance Triathlon, Duathlon & AquaBike will still challenge you while rewarding you with absolutely incredible views.

Ultra-Sprint Distance Triathlon, Duathlon & AquaBike – We've shortened the Swim and Run for the Ultra-Sprint Distances (1/2 mile Swim and 5k Run) but maintained the longer 28 mile bike (we have to since we haven't been able to figure out how to move the lake closer to the village 😉 This makes our Ultra-Sprint a little harder than a Sprint Distance and a little easier than an Olympic Distance. A perfect mid-distance! You'll get all the beauty at a manageable distance so you still have the energy to party!

Marathon, Half-Marathon, 10k & 5k Run/Walks:These courses circle Sunriver Resort on wide, paved, very scenic bike paths that will take you through meadows and forests, past rivers, and beautifully landscaped golf greens and summer homes. Each course has minimal elevation gain to navigate and a fast downhill and flat finish. Runners and Walkers will finish the race at the Sunriver Village Mall (Athlete Village) to the cheers of the enthusiastic crowd. Once finished, runners can enjoy the finish line festivities, including the Sports & Fitness Expo and live entertainment.
28K & 50K Trail Run: An extremely scenic, point-to-point course starting at Wanoga Snow Park and finishing with the last few miles running the paved paths of Sunriver ending at one of the best multi sports finish lines in the Pacific Northwest. Tour de Crest: These non-competitive 26 mile & 55 mile bike tours offer fantastic scenery allowing friends and family to ride parts of the Long Course, Olympic & Ultra Sprint Distance bike courses. It's also a great way for our athletes to preview parts of the course at an easy pace before race day. These rides offer a chance for the whole family to participate together in the same event. The roads used are very well-maintained with very little traffic. The routes chosen are also moderate in that they do not include any ultra-steep grades, and the scenery will take your breath away. With that said, these courses aren't kid-friendly. If you want to ride with your kids, stay on the SunRiver Bike paths - much safer and flat so the kids won't be complaining the whole time! Make the Tour de Crest events part of your family getaway and enhance your enjoyment of the Pacific Crest Weekend Sports Festival. This is a supported event with water, energy drink, fruit and energy bars at the water stations along the course and a post-event meal once you finish.
Kids Races: We like to get the kids involved at a young age so they develop the habit of a healthy lifestyle and the love for sport and competition. Pacific Crest boasts one of the best and most popular Kids Splash, Pedal n' Dash events with over 500 kids participating and enjoying the opportunity to cross the same finish line as their parents and grandparents to the roaring cheers of the crowd. The smiles on their faces is precious and priceless. We also host a 1 mile and 1/2 mile Dash for the kiddos and the goal of all of our kids’ races is to offer a fun, non-competitive, no pressure event for our future generation of multi-sport athletes.

Awards & Celebrations:
We think you're all winners just for showing up! But to reward those speedsters, we will be awarding Top 3 Male & Female and Top Masters athletes in each Triathlon, Duathlon & Running eventand Top Overall Male & Female for our AquaBike races (we remove overall champions from Age Groups & Divisions so no double-dipping and more people go home with some hardware!)
We will also offer a prize purse for the top five overall males and females for the 72.3 BEASTMAN Triathlon. So all you speedsters can race to have your weekend paid for!
Total Prize Purse for the Pacific Crest 72.3 BEASTMAN Triathlon:
Relay Teams - Award Top Two Team in each of the Men’s, Women’s, and Mixed Divisions.
If you choose to race in the Champion Wave Category, you are not eligible for Age Group awards due to USAT restrictions. You must choose one or the other.
If you choose to race in the Clydesdale (220+ pounds) or Athena (165+ pounds) categories, you are not eligible for Age Group awards due to USAT restrictions. You must choose one or the other.
Based on USAT age categories, if your birthday is prior to December 31st of that race season, you will race in the older age group even if you haven’t celebrated your birthday yet. Due to USAT sanctioning you will ‘age-up’.
Friends & Family – if you choose to race in this Swim Start category, you will not be eligible for awards. This is a non-competitive category that allows friends and family to start in the same swim start wave together regardless of their ages.
BEAST MEDAL: Are you one of those people?! You know, someone who is always looking to do the incredibly insane, seemingly impossible task. Well, if so and if you are plan to double or triple up your racing at Pac Crest, you will earn a special BEAST Medal with a special 3-headed BEAST MEDAL for those of you special BEASTS who compete each day. So for example, you could do the Tour de Crest on Friday morning, the 72.3 BEASTMAN Triathlon on Saturday and the 5k on Sunday or any combination of available races. Beast medals will be distributed during the award ceremonies Saturday and Sunday. You crazy animals!
If you can't make it for the Awards Ceremony, pick up your special Age Group Medal or Beast Medal at the Awards Table adjacent to the Stage in the Food/Beer tent area.

Are Dogs allowed on course? Unfortunately due to insurance requirements, only Service Dogs are allowed on course and must start at the end of the race after all other participants have started.

WATER TEMPERATURE is expected to be between 62 – 66 degrees. The temperature will be taken on Friday and the morning of the race. Wetsuits are recommended.
72.3 BEASTMAN SWIM – 1.2mi - Participants will make two clockwise, diamond shaped loops in crystal clear Wickiup Reservoir, surrounded by the tranquil beauty of green forests and majestic mountains. Large buoys will mark the turn points. Kayakers will be positioned on the water to support the swimmers. Medical support will be present on the beach.
72.3 BEASTMAN BIKE – 58 Miles: A scenic point-to-point course that travels over gently rolling hills prior to three hard climbs as you make your way around Mt. Bachelor. The bike course will be marked with large directional signage and there will be course marshals at key intersections to help direct you. Cyclists leave the transition zone and ride for approximately 3.15 miles and turn (left) onto FS Hwy 42. You will travel another 4.55 miles crossing the Deschutes River then turning right onto FS Hwy 46 (the Cascades Lakes Hwy). It’s now another 32.8 miles before making your next turn (right) onto FS Hwy 45. Within this section there will be long stretches of flat to gently rolling hills followed by three challenging climbs. It culminates with a 2.5-mile steep decline to the intersection of FS Hwys. 45 & 46. The decline flattens out considerably after making the turn onto FS Hwy 45, but continues for another 10 miles or so. After turning left onto FS Hwy 40 at about the 51.9-mile mark it is relatively flat the final 4.4 miles. ELEVATIONS: The first climb begins just past Elk Lake resort, approximately 27 miles into the bike. Just north of Elk Lake you will begin to climb for approximately 650 ft, passing Devils Lake before reaching a flat spot, then climb again to Todd Lake (elev. 6,150 ft). You will experience another flat spot, at about the 35-mile mark, before the final climb to the entrance of Mt. Bachelor (6,500 ft, about 38 miles into the ride). You will then enjoy a 14 mile + downhill ride, the first 2.5 miles being steep with a sharp 90 degree turn onto FS Hwy 45 (*see caution note below).

72.3 BEASTMAN RUN – 13.1mi - A mostly flat loop course on widely paved bike paths that traverse through and around this beautiful and scenic destination resort (two hills total with a minimal elevation gain).
OLYMPIC SWIM – 1,500 meters: Olympic Athletes will make two clockwise, diamond shape loops in crystal clear Wickiup Reservoir, surrounded by the tranquil beauty of green forests and majestic mountains. Large buoys will mark the turn points. Kayakers will be positioned on the water to support the swimmers. Medical support will be present on the beach.
OLYMPIC & ULTRA SPRINT BIKE – 28mi - A scenic point-to-point course that travels over gently rolling hills. The bike course will be marked with large directional signage and course marshals will be present at key intersections. There is only one climb of significance after turning from FS Road 4270 (access road passing Crane Prairie Reservoir) onto FS Hwy 40 (about the 12 mile mark), then its downhill and flat to T-2 (Sunriver Business Park). ELEVATIONS: The course is relatively flat for the first 12 miles or so. Shortly after turning onto FS Hwy 40 and turning right you will begin a sustained climb of about 3/4 mile. The elevation gain is approximately 400 ft.
ULTRA SPRINT:The Ulta-Sprint Course is a 1 loop, 1/2 mile swim, the exact same 28 mile Bike Couse as the Olympic distance and a 3.5 mile run - many athletes LOVE this shorter swim and run option!
ULTRA SPRINT SWIM– 1/2 Mile - Ultra Sprint Athletes will make one clockwise, diamond shape loop in crystal clear Wickiup Reservoir, surrounded by the tranquil beauty of green forests and majestic mountains. Large buoys will mark the turn points. Kayakers will be positioned on the water to support the swimmers. Medical support will be present on the beach.
ULTRA SPRINT BIKE - 28 Miles. Same course as the Olympic Bike course.
ULTRA SPRINT RUN – 3.5 miles - A mostly flat loop course with a short out and back on widely paved bike paths that traverse through and around this beautiful and scenic destination resort
MARATHON & HALF MARATHON COURSE: Marathon (26.2-miles) & Half-Marathon (13.1-miles) start in Sunriver Village adjacent to the PPU/Registration tent. These runs circle Sunriver Resort on wide, paved, very scenic bike paths. The paths are approximately 6 ft wide, perfectly paved and wind through the forest. Each course has only two small hills, with a minimal elevation gain to navigate and a fast downhill to flat finish. Marathoners will receive their Half-Marathon split when traveling through the Athlete Village before heading out on the second loop of this beautiful scenic course that will take you through meadows and forests, past rivers, and beautifully landscaped golf greens and summer homes. The Marathon and Half-Marathon events start and finish in the Athletes Village to the cheers of the enthusiastic crowd. Once finished, runners can enjoy the finish line festivities, including the Sports & Fitness Expo and live entertainment. Post-race refreshments will be provided and the Awards Ceremony for the Marathon/Half-Marathon will begin once the results have been certified.
5K/10K COURSE: The 5K and 10K events start and finish in the Sunriver Athletes Village adjacend to the PPU/Registration tent. The paths are approximately 6 ft wide, perfectly paved and wind around through the forest. Each course has only two small hills with a minimal elevation gain to navigate and a fast downhill to flat finish to the roaring cheers of the crowd.
28K Trail Run:The 28K Trial Run starts at Wanoga Snow Park and is a scenic point-to-point course finishing in Sunriver Village. Here are some of the highlights.
There is only 688 feet of elevation gain! For those of you new to Trail Running this will be a wonderful launch into the sport! Check out the mostly downhill elevation map! For you experienced trail runners, this will be a fast, personal best type of course!
The 28K course is a point-to-point course starting from Wanoga Snow Park. You can either have friends or family drive you to the starting point (approx. 25 minute drive from Sunriver Village) to cheer you on as your start your race or we will have shuttles leaving Sunriver Village starting at 5am on race day to take you to Wanoga Park courtesy of Wanderlust Tours and Sunriver Resort.
The last 2.5 miles of the route will finish over the Cardinal Bridge and Deschutes River in Sunriver onto paved trails through the forests to the finish line that all athletes finish at in Sunriver Village. Post-event festivities will follow including a great post-race meal, FREE Beer and if you have any more energy in your legs, dancing on Friday night to the popular Hit Machine!
50K Trail Run:The 50K Trial Run starts at Wanoga Snow Park and starts with a scenic loop course around Wanoga Snow Park and then continuing with the 28K scenic point-to-point course finishing in Sunriver Village. Here are some of the highlights.

You can either have friends or family drive you to the starting point (approx. 25 minute drive from Sunriver Village) to cheer you on as your start your race or we will have shuttles leaving Sunriver Village starting at 5am on race day to take you to Wanoga Park courtesy of Wanderlust Tours and Sunriver Resort.
The last 2.5 miles of the route will finish over the Cardinal Bridge and Deschutes River in Sunriver onto paved trails through the forests to the finish line that all athletes finish at in Sunriver Village. Post-event festivities will follow including a great post-race meal, FREE Beer and if you have any more energy in your legs, dancing on Friday night to the popular Hit Machine!
TOUR DE CREST RIDES: Our Tour de Crest rides are a non-competitive, non-timed ride allowing athletes, friends and family to ride at a leisurely pace and take as many breaks as they need. With that said, these are not 'easy' rides, are at altitude with a good amount of climbing. Due to this and since they are not closed to traffic, they are not appropriate for children. They are beautiful courses but you should be an experrienced rider and be conditioned enough to manage the courses. 26-Mile Tour de Crest Bike Ride: The ride starts at the SHARC and ends at the Finish Line in Athletes Village. Participants will be escorted by Police to exit Sunriver via Beaver Dr and take Abbott to the main entrance into Sunriver Resort (approximately one mile). Turn right (west) and ride to the 5.6 mile mark crossing over the Deschutes River to the intersection of FS Hwy 40 (known as both Upper Deschutes Rd & 3 Trappers Rd) and FS Hwy 45 (known as Mt Batchelor Cutoff Rd & Edison Ice Cave Rd). This piece of road is the finishing stretch for both the 72.3 BEASTMAN, Olympic and Ultra Sprint Distance Triathons held on Saturday & Sunday respectively. This is the only stretch of road where Cyclists will encounter any residential areas and the road is generally flat.
Participants will then bear right and begin a long gentle incline on FS Hwy 45 for approximately 6.9 miles over a beautifully paved road with wide bike lanes, a favorite stretch of road of the many competitive cyclists living in the Bend, OR area. The turn-around point will be marked with a hydration station and porta potties where you can stop and rest before the downhill return back to Sunriver and the Athletes Village. The ride will finish at the Official Finish Line in Athletes Village where you will collect your medal and post-race meal.
One Aid station for this ride will be located at the turnaround where you can expect water, energy drink, fruit, energy bars/gels, and cheese/crackers. You will not receive your full meal until you reach the finish line - you have to earn it first!
55-Mile Tour de Crest Bike Ride: Participants start at the SHARC and will be escorted by Police to exit Sunriver via Beaver Dr and follow Abbott to the main entrance into Sunriver Resort (approximately one mile). Turn right (west) and ride for approximately ½ mile before turning left onto FS Hwy 42 (S Century Drive). Continue south for approximately three miles where South Century Drive (FS Hwy 42) meets Huntington Rd and makes a dramatic 90 degree turn west. The next stretch of the course is just over 18 miles in length, flat to gentle uphill where the majority of the road is well paved.
Your next turn is left at the 22.8 mile point, taking you into the Twin Lakes recreation area and T-1 (the swim-to-bike Transition Zone for the 72.3 BEASTMAN, Olympic & Ultra Sprint Triathlons) at North Wickiup Boat Ramp on Gull Point, which is located 3.2 miles further. T-1 will serve as a hydration stop and allow participants to enjoy the beautiful scenic views from the lake’s edge.
The course continues by departing T-1 and retracing steps back to the intersection of FS Rd 4260 & FS Hwy 42 (S Century Dr – 3.2 miles). There riders will turn left, then continue west for another 0.7 miles before turning right onto FS Rd 4270 (known as Keefer Rd & E Crane Prairie Rd). Now it is 7.7 miles over flat to moderate hills to the intersection of FS rd 4270 & FS Hwy 40 (3 Trappers Rd) where you will encounter your next hydration station with porta-potties. This location is 37.7 miles into the ride.
The next section is a long, deceiving climb for several miles prior to a long decent to the intersection of FS Hwys 40 & 45 located at the 49.7 mile mark. Enjoy the remaining 5.6 miles back to Sunriver and Athletes Village. The ride will finish at the Official Finish Line in Athletes Village where you will collect your medal and post-race meal.
Aid stations will be located at approximately Mile 13, 26, and 38 miles where you can expect water, energy drink, fruit, energy bars/gels, and cheese/crackers. You will not receive your full meal until you reach the finish line - you have to earn it first!
NOTE: This Tour de Crest Bike Rides are designed as a non-competitive event and not a “race”. All participants will be required to follow all rules governing cyclists on Oregon roads (i.e.: stop at stop signs). Why Racing Events will have support vehicles on the road to assist with mechanical problems and to transport cyclists if needed.

Current carriers that service Redmond are American Airlines, Horizon Airlines, United Express andDelta. The Portland International Airport (PDX) is roughly a 3 hour drive from Sunriver, and is normally a less expensive option for flights.

Training & preparation:
Ok, Step #1. Register! That puts purpose to your training and forces you to commit - an important part of getting to the finish line!
Step #2. It's time to train! Yes, we want you to get to the finish line feeling strong, healthy, reaching for your best, and injury free!
One way to help your training is to join a local running, biking or Tri club, clinic or training studio. Here is a list of resources to assist you with your training and preparation:
If you are new to the sport of Triathlon or Duathlon (or just need some training tips), we posted a 6 week Triathlon Training program that you can read to give you some general guidelines for designing your program and some tips for race day & transitiion.
For you Runners - General Running Program Design: If you are going to attempt this on your own or would like a better understanding of proper training protocol, here are a few general guidelines for designing your training program.
If you are not running consistently right now, start with a Learn to Run program that will start with 1 minute of running and 4 minutes of walking and gradually progress adding 1 minute of running per session per week and reduce walking until you can comfortably run non-stop.
As you progress your weekly long runs, do not increase your volume any more than 10-20% every 1-2 weeks. Be more conservative if you are more prone to injury.
Try not to run 2 days in a row if possible. Running exposes your body to a lot of impact and it is helpful to allow your body time to recover in between running workouts, especially if you are prone to injury.
Allow for one full recovery day per week. It doesn’t mean you have to lay around watching TV and eating bon bons all day but it’s a good idea to have one day a week when you aren’t concerned about getting into your training zone and instead, allow your body a day’s rest from impact and intensity.
If possible, run on packed, level dirt, trails, or grass, which are a lot easier on your body. If running through the city, paved roads (asphalt) are easier on your legs than concrete sidewalks (cement). Just watch for traffic and always run in the opposite direction of cars so you can react if needed.
Implement muscle strength and endurance training into your program. As you run, the muscles of your lower body absorb the forces. As your muscles fatigue, they lose their shock absorbing abilities and the forces are absorbed more through your bones and joints. If you strength train, your muscles become stronger, are better able to absorb impact, take longer to fatigue and are better able to generate greater force leading to faster running speeds. The ability of a muscle to resist fatigue helps reduce the incidence of injury. Research has shown the areas that suffer the largest amount of stress include the feet, the shins, the back, knees and the hip. Therefore, a specific program that addresses these areas must be followed if long-term running is a goal. Luckily you don't need to spend a great deal of time in the weight room to experience these benefits. All you'll need to do is 1 set of 8-20 reps of a variety of exercises two times per week. This equates to about 30-60 minutes a few times a week. We're hoping that those of you who want to minimize your risk for injury and enhance your running performance, will be able to find the motivation and time to fit these short workouts in. If you do not have a personalized weight training program, we strongly encourage you to invest in a few sessions with a trainer, so they can design a program for you. This will ensure you’re not wasting any time during your workouts.
Incorporate cross training into your program. We'd rather see a runner run 3x/week and compliment their program with swimming, cycling, resistance training and fitness classes rather than run 6x/week. Cross training will maintain a greater balance to your program and your body and keep your program exciting.
Consider how you run. Seems easy enough right? Right foot, left foot. But there is actually a science to it. Before you begin any run or run/walk workout, start with a 6-12 minute walk. This will allow your heart rate and breathing rate to increase gradually, your body temperature to rise and prepare your muscles for the workout. Once you've completed your warm-up, complete the following dynamic joint movements to take your lower body joints through their full range of motion in a slow, controlled fashion.
Start with one leg in front of the other.
Raise the back heel up onto your toes and contract the calf. Repeat 10-15x.
Now lift the entire back foot off the floor and contract the glute (buttock). Repeat 10-15x
Now lift the back heel towards the buttocks and contract the hamstrings (back of the thigh). Repeat 10-15x.
Now lift the knee forwards and contract the quads (front of thigh). Repeat 10-15x.
Now hold your knee up and balance while doing 10 ankle circles one way and then the other way. Repeat this sequence on the other leg. Then perform a 20 fast toe taps on each leg and 20 heel raises. You're now ready to start your workout. Ease into your training zone.
Once you have completed each workout including warm-up and cool-down, be sure you save enough time to lengthen and release. This is one of the most important things you can do to reduce your chances of experiencing injuries and to aid in the recovery process. If you don’t foam roll regularly, schedule in with a trainer or coach so they can show you a few critical release techniques.
TAPERING: At about 1-2 weeks from race day, it's time to back off on your training mileage to allow your body enough time to recover and repair before event day. Focus more on quality versus quantity. This is more important for the longer distances.
IMPORTANT EVENT TIPS FOR OUR ROOKIE TRIATHLETES/DUATHLETES:
Shoes (running and cycling cleats if you are wearing them)
Your bib, pins, helmet & bike stickers and chip timing piece
A small towel to place on the ground for your gear
Water bottle, sunscreen, glasses
Change of clothes so you can enjoy the post-event festivities
WHAT TO WEAR: For a Triathlon or Duathlon, you typically don’t want to change clothes too much in between your swim, cycle and run portions. Ideally, find an outfit that you will feel comfortable swimming, biking and running in. If you have regular pedals or a toe/pedal cage, you will wear the same shoes throughout the bike/run. If you use cycling cleats, you will put your cleats on and then change into your running shoes after your bike portion. Watch the weather closely. The show goes on no matter what the weather is doing. Fortunately, if you're dressed correctly, it shouldn't matter. If it's raining, you may want to layer with a form-fitting, water-proof jacket. If it's cold, wear some running gloves. Body Glide or Vaseline is always a good idea on any spots that might rub (underarms, inner thighs, feet). Be sure to have your Bib and Helmet and Bike sticker visible.
Watch the weather closely. The show goes on no matter what the weather is doing.
You must wear your chip timing piece during the entire event. You will be given a band that will hold your chip timing piece around your ankle throughout the entire event. Be sure to have your Chip Timing piece on before you start the race and make sure it's snapped tightly! Be sure to step over the timing mats after each segment of the race. If you are wearing a wet-suit, make sure the timing piece goes under your wetsuit otherwise, you will have a very difficult time getting off your wet suit.
Swim: Wetsuits are optional for the swim but will provide buoyancy and warmth. However, many people opt for no wetsuit so no worries. We will provide you with a swim cap but you will want to bring your own goggles.
Bike: A biking helmet is mandatory. You will also receive 2 stickers in your package with your race number on them. The small sticker should go on the front of your helmet. The bigger sticker will wrap around your bike frame. Road or mountain bikes are acceptable. For safety reasons, be sure to have end-caps on the end of your handle-bars.
Run: You must finish the race with your bib number on the front of you. Some people choose to pin it on at the beginning of the race and have it on for the whole event so they don’t have to worry about it. Others pin it on a singlet that they put on once they finish the swim before they head out for the bike. Others use an elastic racing strap that they pin their bib number to and then quickly strap it on before they leave for the run. Use whatever option feels best for you.
Remember to bring a change of clothing so you can enjoy the post-event festivities. It’s a great beach day venue!
Time to TRI & DU (PUN INTENDED!): If this is your first Triathlon or Duathlon, just focus on having fun. Get there early so you can set up your bike and gear in your marked transition spot. Rack your bike, place your helmet and glasses on the handle bar ready to put on. Place a towel on the ground and put your cycling cleats on it (if you wear cycling cleats). Remember, you should only take about 1.5 feet of space in your area. If you take more space than this, you will get some raised eyebrows from the veterans. Just remember that there’s lots of cyclists that have to fit their bikes and gear in a small area so don’t spread out too much. Now take the time to study the transition area. Where do you start, where is the swim in (or Run1), bike in, bike out, run out and finish? Understand the flow. Memorize where your bike is racked. Feel free to ask questions to the Why Racing Event Crew – they are there to help you! Once the race starts, rookie triathetes should start at the back or to the sides of the swim. If someone panics, it would typcially be during the swim so try to start gradually and give yourself some space. Once you finish your swim (or Run1), you will run to your bike, put on your helmet and glasses, change shoes if needed and follow instructions from course marshals to direct you around the transition area out the exit. You will be instructed to mount your bike and you’re off exiting safely, Bike as hard as you like but take the last mile or so to ride in an easier gear and flush out your legs a bit. That will help your final run a ton! When you arrive back at the transition area, you will be asked to dismount your bike and then run to your transition spot. You will rack your bike, take off your helmet and then change shoes if needed. Then you’re off for your final run. This is the segment of a Triathlon or Duathlon that is typically more challenging. Yes, your legs will feel heavy and tired. Feel free to go easy and take walk breaks if needed. It usually takes some time but your legs will start feeling better and you can ease into your normal pace. Triathletes & Duathletes prepare for this tough transition by practicing this type of Bike/Run workout appropriately called a ‘Brick Workout’ because your legs feel like bricks when running after cycling. But the more you practice, the easier that transition becomes. So when first starting out, don’t be so hard on yourself if it feels really tough – it gets better! Once your cross the finish line – CELEBRATE! You did it! Wear your medal and finishers’ shirt proudly! WAY TO GO!
WHAT TO EAT BEFORE, DURING & AFTER THE RACE:
Eat well the week before the event. Drink lots of water to ensure you're well hydrated and stock up on healthy fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein sources. Dinner the two or three nights before should be a balanced diet of carbs, protein and fat to provide you with sustainable energy. If you know a certain meal has worked in the past, stick with it! And get plenty of rest!
On race morning, your pre-race meal should contain easily digestible carbohydrates (ie. Oatmeal, fruit, energy bar) and should be eaten 1-4 hours before the event. Don't eat anything new. Eat what’s worked in the past. You don't want any unexpected surprises or digestive upsets.
During the event, take water at each of the aid stations. Even just a few sips will help. There will be no aid stations for the bike course, so please carry water and fuel on your bike. Gels and Energy Drink will be available at the aid stations.
Post event - Be sure to get some fluids into your system right away. Start with water and Golazo and then transition to Deschutes Brewery – it’s time to celebrate! Definitely consume some of the fruit, salad, rolls, and Kind energy bars that we will provide within 1 hour of finishing the event. This will help you recover much more quickly and replenish those depleted carbs in your muscles. Then later in the day - eat what you want (within reason). You deserve it! 🙂
HAVE FUN! As you travel to the race, repeat some positive self-statements about how good you feel and how excited you are about the event. Smile and get yourself in a good frame of mind. Remember to enjoy the experience. Try your best, but remember to pace yourself! You've already won just by showing up!
This event requires a ton of volunteers so if you can help recruit friends, family, spouses, companies, churches, or sports teams to help that would be extremely helpful. They will get front row seats to all the action!

In addition, our events offer a terrific fundraising opportunity for a club/organization (non-profit) and a fun, inspiring way to encourage and support the athletes that participate in these events. Under our fundraising program, $20-$25 will be paid to the non-profit organization for each volunteer 4-6+hour shift depending on our needs. All the volunteers will also get a snack, gift, goody bag and be able to enjoy the post-race festivities.
Race participants can also volunteer in return for race credits for future events! We love having athletes as volunteers because you totally get it and know how to take of our athletes!
We typically need about 100 volunteers per day for most events with tasks such as water stations, course marshals, food prep, finish line, & set up and clean up. Pacific Crest, because of the special nature of this event, requires about 800 volunteers for the weekend!
We work with a number of Central Oregon non-profits who volunteer in return for a donation to their organization. And remember, there's no way we could host this event without the help and support of our volunteer team. Many have dedicated hours and hours of time to this event to assure the safety of our athletes and make the event more enjoyable. So be extra-nice to anyone helping out. Thank them as often as possible because we have been told we have the best volunteers ever and we want them to all come back next year!
We’ve got to start them young! Our Kids Splash, Pedal & Dash and our ½ mile and 1 mile Kids Dash events accomplish two things. First, we introduce our kiddos to running, multi-sport and a fun, active lifestyle and secondly, we teach our kids how to give back because 100% of the proceeds from their participation in these events supports Care for Kids, and serves approximately 2,000 kids under the age of 18 in the area between Bend and La Pine, Oregon. Funds raised support many children’s activities including: Healthy Beginnings free health screenings; New Generations low-income day care; enhanced science and math programs and field trips for the local K-8 public school; grants to offset “pay-to-play” activities fees for low-income kids to participate in school athletics; grants to local 4-H clubs, Boy Scouts, Lego Robotics competition, building bus stop shelters and providing scholarships for parenting classes. If you haven’t done so yet, register your Kids for these events and provide them incredible Pacific Crest racing memories too!
KIDS SPLASH PEDAL-N-DASH – ages 12 & under
Splash Pedal-n-Dash starts at the SHARC, within walking distance of the Athletes Village along Beaver Drive starting at 4pm on Friday.
It is a fun, short race with kids starting by maneuvering through an inflatable obstacle course. Then they’re directed to the parking lot transition area to get their bikes and ride to the Community Church parking lot. They will enter the transition area at the church, drop their bikes, and are directed out to the run path along Abbot Drive towards the finish line.
Splash Pedal-n-Dash finishes at the Athletes Village through the same Finish line that all the athletes will cross to the roar of the crowds making the kids feel super special as they receive their finisher’s medal!
The Splash Pedal-n-Dash is a timed but non-competitive, fun event!
Packet Pickup – Pickup your Child’s packet and/or register for the Kids races on Friday from 10am-3pm in the Village at PPU/Registration tent. Try not to leave this until the last minute because there’s a lot to get organized and you want this to be fun and stress-free for your child. We try to make this feel like a real event with body marking and bike & helmet stickers.
Bikes may be dropped off at the SHARC back parking lot from 1:30pm to 3:45pm but you may not park your car there.
5 different age divisions –
Group 1: Age 11 & 12 (no parents) Group 2: Age 9 & 10 (no parents) Group 3: Age 7 & 8 (no parents) Group 4: Age 5 & 6: (Optional parents for children not ready to venture out on their own – just speak to a Race official) Group 5: Age 4 & Under (with parents) – Parents walk beside pools and stay with kids on course.

Friday at 1:30pm Transition area at SHARC opens for bike check-in. Volunteers will help direct you where to place your child’s bike on the parking line behind their age cone. Handlebars should be facing north for ages 9 to 12, and south for ages 4 to 8. Please hold onto your child’s bike helmet, as they will need to wear it at the start of the Splash.
3:45pm Transition area closes. All bikes must be staged in the transition area at this time. All kids and parents should be in the spectator area in the SHARC Amphitheater. Please do not climb over, under or through the fencing/flagging. Bikes not placed in transition area by this time are not allowed and must be held by the parent until their child completes the splash. The parent is then allowed to hold the bike for the child at end of the pools. The child must walk it back into transition and to the appropriate exit out of the parking lot.
All Kids start in a time-trial format, two at a time through the slide/wading pools. Kids must have their SHOES, BIB AND BIKE HELMET ON AT THE START.
Before the race, please don’t allow your child to get close to the timing mats by the pools, as their time will be activated.
If you want two of your children to go together, but they are in different groups, please choose the younger group to start.
After race, bikes may be picked up at any time from the Community Church parking lot transition area.
Parents are allowed to watch and take pictures from behind the fencing during the splash and as they begin the bike leg of the race. Parents may meet up with their child on the run course, or take the Beaver Drive path to village to meet at the Finish Line. Always use gates to cross the course, and don’t cross over, through or under any fencing. This allows for the safest environment for all.
It is best to divide and conquer this race if possible. For example, one parent is at the start with their child while another parent/family/friend is at the finish line to capture photos and congratulate your athlete! It’s very difficult to start with your child and make it to the finish line by the time they finish – especially with the older, faster kids!
Safety Tip: Write your child’s name and your cell phone number of back of children’s bib at registration.
Maps will be provided at the Packet Pickup/Registration tent in Athletes Village. Our Kids races are well-monitored and take place on the wide, paved bike paths.
Bikes may be picked up from the Community Church parking lot transition area after the event is completed.
KIDS DASH - ½ Mile & 1 mile distance - Sunday at 8am
Kids Dash events start and finish at the Athletes Village through the same Finish line arch that all the athletes will cross to the roar of the crowds making the kids feel super special as they receive their finisher’s medal! Meet at the arch about 20-30 minutes prior to the start of the races to get organized and for race instructions.
The Kids Dash events are non-competitive & fun! If your child requires more of a challenge, feel free to sign them up for the 5k!
Packet Pickup – Pickup your Child’s packet and/or register for the Kids Dash runs on Friday, Saturday or Sunday (at least 30 minutes prior to the start of the race) in the Village at the designated time listed on the Master Schedule. Try not to leave this until the last minute because there’s a lot to get organized and you want this to be fun and stress-free for your child.
